PS, I Love You(Movie Tie-in Edition)
PS, I Love You is Irish writer Cecelia Ahern's first novel, published in 2004. Cecelia Ahern's first novel was launched with a maximum of hype and publicity. If one believes the publicity, she is the next Shakespeare - a suggestion which does no favours for Ms Ahern. Reader's expectations are raised to expect a profound work of literature and instead they get a nice holiday read. The heroine of the book is Holly, a thirty year old Dublin woman whose husband died of cancer and who is trying to get on with her life as a young widow. The idea is brilliant - her husband leaves her a series of challenges to be carried out each month up to the good idea. It is cliched and predictable with more than suggestion of the 'Dort" accent and lifestyle, which revolves round trendy night clubs and bars and getting stupidly and embarrassingly drunk.
The characters are slightly drawn and are the stock figures of romance- disapproving in-laws, unsympathetic and tear-away siblings and supportive but puzzled parents - who all behave predictably. The theme of the book is meant to be how Holly comes to term with the devastation of losing her husband - with his help. Bereavement and loss are very weighty subjects for a young inexperienced author to tackle effectively. She does not succeed in doing justice to her chosen theme and fails to convey any depth feelings or emotion in her main character.
That said, this is an easy read with an in-built feel good factor and is ideal for whiling away the hours on the beach.
The book reached the top bestseller status for 19 weeks in Ireland, United Kingdom, United States, Germany and Netherlands.

Plot summary.
Holly Kennedy is beautiful,
smart and married to the love of her life-a passionate, funny and
impetuous Irishman named Gerry. So when Gerry's life is taken by an
illness, it takes the life out of Holly. The only one who can
help her is the person who is no longer there.
Nobody knows Holly better than Gerry. So it's a good thing he planned ahead. Before he died, Gerry wrote Holly a series of 10 letters that will guide her, not only through her grief but in rediscovering herself. The messages are Gerry's way of informing Holly life goes on.
The messages include various tasks and treats Gerry has left for Holly. This is his way of letting her know he will always be there for her. In the months that follow, more letters from Gerry are delivered in surprising ways, each sending her on a new adventure and each signing off in the same way: "P.S. I Love You".
Holly's mothers and best friends, Sharon and Denise, begin to worry that Gerry's letters are keeping Holly tied to the past, but in fact, each letter is pushing her further into a new future. With Gerry's words as her guide, Holly embarks in a journey of rediscovery in a story about marriage, friendship and how a love so strong can turn the finality of death into new beginning for life.

Review
from people that already read this heartbreaking novel...
"I'm not a big reader, but a friend had told me about this book. So I thought, OK I'll read it & see if it's really that good. And yes, my friend was right. Because I couldn't put the book away. This book really grab me. It's funny & also sad." IrelandLover on 25 April 2008 ________________________________________ "I have to say that this is the first book of Cecelia Ahern books that I have read and I wasn't disapointed. I saw her on the Tv talking about her new book out and what similarities it had to her book P.S I Love You. It was a great read and I couldn't put it down. Like her character, I couldn't wait to read what the next letter from her dead husband would say. I recommended this book wholeheartedly to those sentimental types out there. I can't wait to read her new book!" L. Tarbutt "honey 130888" on 20 April 2008 Great Read. ________________________________________ "Having watched the film recently, I felt I had to read the book as I had been told it was so much better on paper. They were right!! It was nothing like the film!! I thoroughly enjoyed reading "Ps I Love You". Found myself laughing and crying through most of it, a fantastic read! I suppose it just needs to be your cup of tea...." Ms. J. Fegan "Jemma x" on 2 April 2008 Ashame some people disliked this book, I LOVED IT!! ________________________________________ "My pet genres are sci-fi and thrillers and chic reads do not usually appeal to me too, but i heard so much about this book from my friends. I did not regret reading it one bit. It is not the best ‘chic’ reads that i have come across, but definitely one of the better ones. I suggest you stay away from the movie though, it disappoints." criimson on April 1st, 2008 ________________________________________ "I love books but I never like chic lits. My friends keep recommending this to me, so I decided to break from my usual genres of adventure, fantasy and thriller and bought it. I have finished it, I just got it like yesterday. So far, I love it. Some parts make you laugh. Others are so sweet they make your heart melt." - c H i E n - on April 1st, 2008 ________________________________________ "I loved every minute of this book, i would definately recommend this for the ladies to read. You even find yourself crying with the characters in the book" Ms. Emma L. L. Hopley "Emmsy81" on 27 Feb 2008 Great Read! ________________________________________ "I read this book a while back now and it was my favourite Ahern book. It was clevererly written and it made me smile and cry at the same time. If you love chick lit youll love this book! " Marie Judd on 2 Feb 2008 Loved this book. ________________________________________ "It was a great read, enjoyed the story and loved the little notes she got throughout the the book. Looking forward to seeing the film." Lisa1 on 2 Feb 2008 Great Book!! ________________________________________ "im the kind of person who never quite manages to get to the end of the third chapter no matter how hard i try, this year though (as a new years resolution) i thought i would try a little harder..." M. bailey "mia" on 28 Jan 2008 wow, i managed to finish a book! ________________________________________ "It was such an amazing book to read and has made its way up to the top three of my fave books ever! The heartwarming tale of Holley Kennedy, a young widow, trying to move on with her life after the death of her husband, lover and best friend, Gerry. When she starts to recieve the ten letters he has written to her before his death from a brain tumour, she realises that she doesn't have to let go of Gerry just yet...." Annette Wilson "Book Worm" on 23 Jan 2008 Loved It! ________________________________________ "This book is a must read. It gave me so many feelings - shivers down my spine, tears, laughter and so much more. It does make you realise how special life is and how death affects people in so many ways. " Lady "Lady Divine" on 18 Jan 2008 ________________________________________ "I have been and am still going through what the main character experiences in this book. If you have a friend who has lost their partner or you have experienced this yourself then read this book!! It makes you realise you're not the only one. I can only think the writer has been through the same in some way, as she gets every emotion, stage and feeling spot-on. It is heart-wrenching at times and makes you giggle out loud at others. Best book I've read in a long time..." Avid Reader on 17 Jan 2008 TOOK MY BREATH AWAY! ________________________________________ "If you`re up for a cry, this is absolutely the book for you! It`s fantastically heartwarming and you really get attached to it. The writing is fenomenal, so don`t bother with the tossers that rated this item with one star! This is an investment for the future and it will truly change your life. A must have for your book shelf!" B. Jensseter "Marie Jensseter" on 13 Jan 2008 AMAZING! ________________________________________ "One of the best reads I've had in a long time. The reader experiences Holly's grieving experience and her ups and downs on the road to recovery. It's a very romantic novel but one I'd recommend it to anyone (perhaps not males though)! You find yourself unable to put the book down, it's a real page-turner. Happiness and sadness are juxtaposed throughout the novel so one minute, you'll find yourself laughing and the next you'll be crying. You don't sympathise with Holly, you feel empathy - which is one reason why this story is so powerful." Ms. A. Huff "abbie_huff" on 24 Dec 2007 A fabulous novel ________________________________________ |
